CDL Drivers New Training Requirements for 2022

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will change the minimum training requirements for CDL applicants nationally, by requiring entry-level driver training (ELDT) effective February 7, 2022.
FMCSA changes will apply to:
- First-time applicants for a Class A or B CDL
- Existing CDL upgrades (Class A or B CDL)
- CDL additional endorsements for hazardous materials, passenger, or school bus
They will grandfather those that already have their CDL over.
They increased some changes in the requirements hours for behind-the-wheel training and expanded knowledge training. Certified institutions or operators listed in the FMCSA training must provide the new requirements provided registry.
This new national standard will make certain a consistent minimum level of safety and competence for all CDL applicants. As a result, the cost of driver training will increase because Commercial driver training providers will need to provide additional ELDT training and prove ELDT completion for CDL applicants. Proving ELDT training by an FMCSA approved facility will affect those individuals who traditionally opted out of formal driver training, studied for the permit, and practiced on their own.
The training providers that offer the new ELDT training must register on the FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry. Also, driver’s training certification will need to be uploaded to the Training Provider Registry. This additional process could adversely affect the continuous driver shortage we are currently experiencing due to COVID-19.
